Girls of different ages may be in the same grade, the normal school starting age in Guatemala is 5 years old, some of these girls may have been unable to start school at this time due to the financial circumstances of their family or they may have started on time but due to financial issues have not been able to attend during a later year due to changing circumstances of the family, sometimes children attend school for only a couple of years, then the family send another child and cannot afford to support both.

The school system of Guatemala is as follows :

From 16 years - 4 Dviersificado the students specialize - common specializations are - Accountant, Secretary, Teacher and Bachilerato which is the course which has to be completed to go on to university (subject yet to be decided). The other specializations can lead to work after 6 Diversificado or the student can go on to University and become more qualified in their chosen career.
